Chemical Peels

in Grand Rapids, MI

One of the best skin rejuvenation techniques is a chemical peel. Chemical peels can help to improve the appearance of the skin on the face, neck, and hands. Dr. John Iacobucci helps his patients in and around Grand Rapids to get beautiful, refreshed skin with his chemical peels.

What is a Chemical Peel?

A chemical peel is a type of facial that is made of a chemical solution. It is applied to the skin causing exfoliation. The damaged skin cells eventually peel off. This shows new skin tissue which is smoother and less wrinkled than the old skin. There are three basic types of chemical peels the superficial peel, the medium peel, and the deep peel.

The superficial peel uses alpha-hydroxy acid or a different mild acid to gently exfoliate the epidermis. This helps to improve the appearance of mild skin discoloration and rough skin. This helps to refresh the face, neck, chest, and hands.

The medium peels use glycolic or trichloroacetic acid that is applied to penetrate the outer and middle layers of the skin to remove any damaged cells. This helps to improve age spots, fine lines, wrinkles, sun damage, and skin discoloration.

The deep peel uses trichloroacetic acid or phenol to deeply penetrate the middle layer of the skin to remove any damaged cells. This treatment helps to improve lines, age spots, scars, and freckles. Patients can see a dramatic improvement in their appearance from this treatment.

How is a Chemical Peel Done?

When you go in for your chemical peel at Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Grand Rapids, he will cleanse your face to remove any makeup or dirt. Then the chemical solution will be applied to the face. Dr. Iacobucci will carefully monitor your skin as the peel works. When the chemical peel has reached the desired results, it will be removed. The amount of time for this treatment varies depending on your skin condition and desired results.

Recovery from a Chemical Peel

After a chemical peel, the skin will be very sensitive, and you should avoid direct sunlight following the treatment. For superficial peels, many patients only need a couple of days before their skin is healed. Makeup can typically be worn the next day. For medium peels, many patients need up to two weeks to heal. The skin will be red and swollen but should subside within a couple days. A mild cream may be applied, but makeup shouldn’t be worn until the skin is healed. Deep peels require two to three weeks to heal. Dr. Iacobucci will provide you with detailed instructions to follow during the healing time.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Patients who wish to get a refreshed appearance to their skin and improve issues such as wrinkles, fine lines, acne scars, sun damage, and hyperpigmentation can get chemical peels. At a consultation with Dr. Iacobucci, he will examine your skin and concerns to see how this treatment could be beneficial for you.
