One of the main areas that people feel self-conscious about is the abdomen. The abdomen gains excess skin and fat easier than many other parts of the body, and it can be hard to hide. If you have loose, sagging skin on your stomach and it doesn’t go away with diet and exercise then you should consider getting a tummy tuck done. At Aesthetic Plastic Surgery of Grand Rapids, Dr. Iacobucci offers tummy tucks to his patients.
What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, formally called abdominoplasty, is a surgical procedure that removes excess loose, sagging skin on the abdomen as well as tightening the muscles. This procedure is often done for women who have had c-sections or people who have lost a lot of weight and are left with excess skin that cannot be toned. Tummy tucks can be done in combination with other procedures such as breast surgeries, liposuction, and arm lifts.
How is a Tummy Tuck Done?
Tummy tucks can be done either as inpatient or outpatient procedures. There are three types of tummy tucks, a mini, full, or extended. In each type of tummy tuck, a horizontal incision will be made along the bikini line near where the pubic hair begins. Dr. Iacobucci will then tighten the muscles and soft tissue of the abdomen before removing excess skin and fat. During a mini tummy tuck, the skin is only altered on the lower half of the abdomen rather than the full abdomen. Your belly button will also be repositioned to look more natural. A full tummy tuck can take anywhere between two-to-five hours.
Recovery from a Tummy Tuck
Your incisions will be bandaged, and surgical drains may be placed to remove any excess fluid or blood. Swelling, bruising, and inflammation are common side effects but should subside within a few weeks. This is major surgery, so the healing time is slow. Dr. Iacobucci will stick with you throughout your recovery and he will provide you with detailed instructions to make this time as easy as possible.
Who is a Good Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?
If you have loose, sagging skin that doesn’t improve with diet and exercise then you could be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. Having this extra skin and fat can obstruct your profile and desired contours. It is important to note that is not a weight loss surgery but can help to put the final touches on your weight loss journey. You should be in good health and a nonsmoker before getting this procedure. Dr. Iacobucci will examine your body and go over your medical history to make sure this is a good option for you.
